A piece of history
El Cabanyal has a fascinating history dating back to the 18th century, when it was still an independent fishing village. The neighborhood developed along the coastline, with long, straight streets running parallel to the sea. One of the most striking features of El Cabanyal are the colorful tiles that adorn the facades of the traditional houses. These tiles not only serve an artistic function, but also protect the houses from the harmful effects of the sea air. Despite challenges such as fires and urban development, El Cabanyal has maintained its authentic character. Today in El Cabanyal you see a unique mix of locals sitting in front of their homes and a new generation bringing modern developments to the neighborhood.
The colored fishermen’s houses in the narrow streets are beautiful, but some also reflect all the challenges the neighborhood has already faced. The creative locals have also brought Street Art to the district, which you won’t miss either as you walk the streets.

Foodhall Mercabañal
Located in the heart of El Cabanyal is Mercabañal, an open-air gourmet market that offers a diverse range of dining options. With its lively atmosphere and various food stalls, you can enjoy everything from gourmet burgers to Thai food here. The market has terraces on different levels, making it a perfect place to relax and enjoy the sunny weather. The place is always lively, from young to old, local to tourist.
Mercado del Cabanyal
This traditional market is an important part of the neighborhood and reflects El Cabanyal’s rich fishing tradition. The market is known for its fresh seafood, including bonito, calamari and red scorpion fish, often caught close to Valencia’s beaches. In addition to its fresh produce, the market also has a bar with an outdoor terrace, making it an ideal place for a classic almuerzo (morning snack). The market’s lively atmosphere and historical significance make it a must-visit. Consequently, you will be able to find many locals here.
Mercader Cabanyal
A relatively new addition to the neighborhood, Mercader Cabanyal is a gourmet market housed in the historic Tonelería Soler building, which was originally a barrel factory. Combining traditional and modern elements, this market offers a variety of food stalls featuring tapas, pintxos (small bites originally from northern Spain) and gourmet dishes. With a garden and patio, it is an ideal place to enjoy a meal in a relaxed setting.

Gelatica Ice Concept
A little hidden away at the tip of the neighborhood, you can find Gelática Ice Concept. I promise you, it’s more than worth it. Known for its high-quality ingredients and innovative flavors, Gelatica Ice Concept offers a delicious assortment of ice cream and pastries. The ice creams are made by the sub champion ice cream maker of the world! A tip from me, try a nice pan au chocolate, as I have rarely tasted such a delicious chocolate bun.
Kaide
In this colorful neighborhood you’ll also find Kaide, a unique and hip place that immediately gives you a warm welcome. Inside you can enjoy excellent coffee, delicious pastries and tasty brunch dishes, all freshly prepared!
The staff is young and incredibly friendly, which you can also feel in the atmosphere of the café. Outside there is a small terrace where you can enjoy your delicious cup of coffee in the sun. Be sure to try one of their freshly made cakes!

Artesana Gelat
The best and most delicious Italian ice cream in El Cabanyal can be found at Artesana Gelat. Not a commercial franchise, but artisan made with local products. Be sure to try the semi fredos and crema di pistache. They also serve gluten, lactose and sugar-free ice cream. The staff is incredibly friendly and makes sure you walk out the door with a big smile and a delicious ice cream.

La Otra Parte
Just one street behind the boulevard you can find this more local Taberna. They have tapas, salads and just delicious dishes to share for a very reasonable price. You can sit nicely on the terrace but also inside you will have a nice seat. A young vibe and a tad alternative. Depending on the time of year they also have ”duende” this is Flamenco, often it is just the zigueners from the Cabanyal neighborhood itself who come here to sing and dance. So very authentic.
La Batisfera
La Batisfera, a unique combination of an international bookstore and a cozy bar-cafeteria. Offering a wide range of new and used books in different languages, this place is a perfect place to relax with a good book while enjoying delicious tapas, craft beers, wines, coffee and fresh juices. There is also a children’s corner, a stage for music performances and regular cultural events. La Batisfera is a lively and inspiring place for locals and visitors alike!
Bodega La Peseta
Close to the port of Valencia, the bodega La Peseta is tucked away.With more than a century of history, the authentic atmosphere has been preserved in this establishment. Inside, it looks just like a courtyard with laundry hanging from the windows and balcony.The decor of this charming but noisy bodeguita is formed by wooden beams, barrels and old shelves.
The best thing about La Peseta are the uncomplicated tapas, made with quality produce from various places, markets and bakeries in town. But what people really come for are the famous Tortillas (potato omelette), of which they usually have several variations on the bar.
Bar Lapaca
Bar La Paca is a charming and cozy bar in the El Cabanyal neighborhood. It is known for its delicious tortillas, tapas and an extensive selection of drinks, including beer, vermouth and wine. The bar has a warm, inviting atmosphere and is a popular place for locals and tourists alike to relax and enjoy a good meal. The friendly staff and cozy decor make it a must-visit in the neighborhood.
Casa Montaña
The century-old restaurant and winery Casa Montaña was awarded the 2023 award for ”Best Wine Bar in Spain” at the International Wine Challenge Industry Awards (IWC). This nearly two-hundred-year-old bodega is a family-run business located in Valencia’s old wiper district of Cabanyal, near Malvarrosa beach.
They specialize in tapas and wines. It is highly recommended to enjoy delicious tapas here among the wine barrels. Be sure to try the marinated tuna and broad beans! Although slightly more expensive, Casa Montaña also offers high quality and excellent service who also speak English.
TIP: Don’t forget to make a reservation in advance, as it is required!

Cabanyal Intim Festival
El Cabanyal hosts the annual Cabanyal Intim Festival in May, a festival featuring a variety of art forms, including theater, dance, music and performances.The festival is unique because the performances take place in various locations throughout the neighborhood. Think private homes, stores, markets and theaters.
The origin of the festival was to demonstrate the urban expansion plans that the neighborhood still faces today. A real hit with locals and tourists alike, the Festival offers a chance to experience the neighborhood’s creative and cultural richness.

La Fabrica de Hielo
Fabrica de Hielo used to be an ice factory that today has been converted into one of the most popular cultural centers in Valencia. The place is always busy with its various seating areas both inside and outside. A nice drink to end the working day, but also to go out really well. In fact, Fabrica de Hielo has regular concerts, as well as theater, markets and DJs. A real hot spot not to be missed in this neighborhood!
Teatre El Musical (TEM)
This beautiful neighborhood is also home to Teatre El Musical, a vibrant cultural venue that offers a variety of performances, including theater, dance music and poetry. It is also an educational venue that hosts activities, workshops and events for young and old from the community. There are regular performances by both local and international artists. be sure to check out their program if you are in the area!

Bar Cabanyal
Right across from the Cabanyal market, where the day’s harvest is brought in, lies this gem. The cultural and gastronomic boom in this coastal neighborhood is already here, attracting gourmets from all over Valencia. The property is simple but looks like a traditional bar with a touch of seafaring, with white tiles and blue accents. The sunny terrace overlooks the street.
The cuisine revolves around seafood and there is no menu; they ”sing” the dishes for you. The dishes are simple, no frills, no need for complicated creations because the fish and seafood are ultra fresh and flavorful!
And all at very reasonable prices. here you must absolutely taste the succulent giant prawns, they are so delicious they will make you lick your fingers. Also, don’t forget to try the Andalusian interpretation of kibbeling, the Cazon.
